Mission for the Missing is a non-profit organization created to locate missing children and adults. Mission provides logistical support, funding, equipment and trained search and rescue professionals to families of missing persons, both children and adults. At a time when many state and local law enforcement agencies are experiencing deep budget cuts, Mission augments increasingly limited public sector resources to ensure timely, effective responses in a case, especially in the critical hours after a person goes missing. All of Mission's services are provided on a pro bono basis whether to families or law enforcement. Created in 2009, Mission for the Missing is funded with private dollars and contributions from the public.

The search continues. July 25, 2012 Melanie Melanson went missing from Woburn in 1989 at age fourteen. Since that time multiple ground searches have been conducted both by law enforcement and private volunteer groups. During a search last fall teams brought together by Mission for the Missing identified an area in Woburn that will be the subject of a forensic dig in mid August.

Recently information was received that Melanie’s remains may have been moved and now buried in the Middlesex Fells Reservation in Stoneham. K-9 teams and search professionals from three states will be searching this coming Saturday, July 28, 2012 in a portion of the reservation that presents the highest probability of a locate. The command post will be set up at the dead end of Fallon Rd., Stoneham early in the morning with a briefing scheduled for 6:45am. It is uncommon for us to activate K-9 teams during the summer for a human remains search but with a dig scheduled for August in Woburn we determined it best to follow up on the lead as quickly as possible.

Teams will work as long as weather and conditions permit. Mission Co-Founder, Alan Tate, was the incident commander at the latest search for Melanie Melanson.
